Sputnik Aragonite, also known as Starburst Aragonite, is a fascinating natural mineral specimen found in Morocco. Known for its distinctive radiating crystal formations, these unusual clusters look almost as though they have burst outwards from a central point.

Why Is It Called Sputnik Aragonite?

The nickname “Sputnik” is thought to come from the radiating shape of the clusters, reminiscent of Sputnik-era satellite imagery. It is also commonly called Starburst Aragonite because of its naturally occurring star-like formations.

Importantly, these incredible shapes are naturally formed — they are not carved or assembled. Each specimen develops its own unique arrangement of radiating crystals.

What Is Aragonite?

Aragonite is a naturally occurring form of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) with an orthorhombic crystal system. Interestingly, Aragonite and Calcite have the same chemical composition but different crystal structures, which can result in very different natural formations.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 3.5–4, Aragonite is relatively soft. The radiating crystals of Sputnik Aragonite can also be delicate, so specimens should be handled with care.

Morocco is well known for producing beautiful Sputnik Aragonite specimens, including material from the Tazouta area.

Traditional specimens are often earthy orange-brown or reddish-brown, while other finds can feature white, cream and combinations of white and brown. Their unusual natural geometry and variations in colour make them particularly interesting mineral specimens to collect.
