Discovering Ocean Jasper – A Beautiful Stone of Joy and Tranquillity
I first discovered Ocean Jasper over ten years ago while reigniting my passion for crystals and minerals. At the time, I had no idea this beautiful material had only been introduced to the crystal world in the late 1990s. As a relatively recent discovery, it's no surprise it took a little while to find its way into collections around the world.
Like many newly discovered crystals, Ocean Jasper took time to be mined, cut, polished, and shared with the wider crystal community. Today, it has become one of the most recognisable and sought-after stones, admired for both its incredible natural beauty and its gentle, uplifting energy.
🌊Why Is It Called Ocean Jasper?
Ocean Jasper was originally named after the first deposits discovered along the coastline of Madagascar, where some material could only be accessed at low tide. Although the name has remained, not all Ocean Jasper comes from coastal deposits. Additional deposits have since been discovered inland in Madagascar, and more recently, similar material has also come from Indonesia.
Ocean Jasper is typically found in nodules and veins and is closely associated with chalcedony and other quartz minerals.
A Crystal That Continues to Surprise
The earliest Ocean Jasper became famous for its distinctive circular "orbicular" patterns, which earned it the nickname Orbicular Ocean Jasper.
As new deposits have been discovered, Ocean Jasper has revealed an even wider range of colours and patterns. Today you'll find specimens displaying soft greens, soothing blues, delicate pinks, warm yellows, creamy whites, earthy browns, and sometimes vibrant combinations of several colours in a single piece.
While classic orbicular patterns are still highly prized, much of the more recent material features beautiful flowing bands, swirls, and layered patterns, making every piece wonderfully unique.

Despite its name, Ocean Jasper is generally considered a beautiful variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. Over millions of years, volcanic activity, silica-rich fluids, and naturally occurring minerals combined to create the incredible colours, patterns, and formations we see today.
