Tabular Quartz

Tabby Quartz – The Flat-Out Fascinating Crystal

Tabular Quartz, also known by its nickname Tabby Quartz (and no, it’s got nothing to do with cats), is one of those stones that really catches the eye—and not just because of its shine. What makes it so cool is its shape. Instead of the usual chunky points we see with most quartz crystals, tabby quartz forms in a thin, flat shape—kind of like a crystal that got squished sideways. It has two large flat sides, two thin sides, and somewhere in there, two other little edges hanging on—making up the classic six-sided quartz formation. The overall shape gives it a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio, and once you’ve seen one, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

The name "tabular" actually comes from the Latin word tabula, meaning “table” or “slab,” which fits it perfectly. It still has those beautiful points at the end, just in a flattened form—sort of like a crystal pancake with sparkle.

Tabby quartz doesn’t just come in clear quartz either—you might also spot it in Amethyst or Citrine. And here’s a little secret: whether it grew this way naturally or was polished into shape later, it still works just as beautifully in energy work.

While tabby formations aren’t uncommon in crystals like hematite or barite, they’re a bit more special when found in quartz, which is probably why so many crystal lovers get excited when they come across one.

Metaphysical Vibes

Metaphysically, tabby quartz is believed to act as a bridge—linking different levels of consciousness or even helping connect people during communication. It’s often used to “download” information during meditation or energy work, almost like it acts as a cosmic clipboard. Some say it helps bring structure to scattered thoughts and opens up clearer pathways between the heart and mind. A great one to keep close when journaling, planning, or doing spiritual work that needs some grounding without dulling your intuition.
