A Beginner’s Guide to Crystal Scrying & Gazing
Crystals have been used for centuries as tools for insight, guidance, and meditation. One of the most fascinating practices is crystal scrying, also known as crystal gazing. Most people picture the classic image of a fortune teller with a crystal ball—but there’s so much more to this ancient art.
Whether you’re curious about crystal ball reading or you want to explore new ways of working with crystals, this guide will give you a gentle introduction.
What Is Crystal Scrying?
Scrying is the practice of gazing into a reflective or translucent surface—such as a crystal ball, mirror, or even water—to quiet the mind and allow intuitive images, symbols, or messages to arise.
Instead of predicting the future, scrying is more about opening a doorway into your subconscious, helping you receive guidance, inspiration, or clarity.
Crystals are especially popular for scrying because of their natural beauty and energy. The most traditional tool is the clear quartz crystal ball, but many people also use obsidian spheres, amethyst, or even polished crystal slices.
A Little History of Crystal Gazing
Crystal gazing has roots in many cultures. Ancient Druids are said to have used reflective surfaces like water or shiny stones. In the Middle Ages, crystal balls became linked with seers and oracles, often carved from clear quartz. The familiar image of the “fortune teller with the crystal ball” comes from this tradition.
But crystal scrying has always been more about intuition than fortune-telling. It’s a way of accessing wisdom—whether from your subconscious mind, your higher self, or spiritual guidance.
How to Try Crystal Scrying (Beginner-Friendly Steps)
1. Choose Your Crystal
A clear quartz crystal ball is the most traditional choice.
Obsidian spheres are grounding and protective.
Amethyst can bring a gentle, spiritual quality.
Pick the one you feel most drawn to. Even a small crystal ball can work beautifully for beginners.
But here’s the thing—you don’t actually need a classic crystal ball like the ones you see in Hollywood movies. A single tumbled stone can be perfectly fine for scrying. I know very gifted mediums who use tumbled stones. Personally, I love palm stones because they’re a little larger than a tumble, revealing more surface area for images and meanings to appear. Having an assortment to pick from is also fun—it’s almost like tarot or oracle cards if you like working with multiple crystals.
2. Create a Calm Space
Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. Dim the lights, light a candle if you wish, and let yourself relax. Soft music or incense can help set the mood.
3. Relax and Focus
Place the crystal ball (or chosen stone) in front of you, either on a stand or cloth. Gaze into it gently, without straining. Let your eyes soften, as if you’re looking through the crystal rather than at its surface.
4. Let Images Arise
At first, you may see only reflections or light. That’s perfectly normal. With practice, shapes, colours, or symbols may appear. These are personal and may not always make sense right away. The key is to trust your intuition.
5. Record Your Impressions
After your session, jot down any images, words, or feelings you noticed. Over time, patterns may appear, and your intuitive confidence will grow.
Tips for Beginners
Be patient—it takes practice to quiet the mind and allow visions to flow.
Don’t force anything. If nothing appears, simply enjoy the calming energy of your crystal.
Work in short sessions at first (5–10 minutes).
Cleanse your crystal ball or stones regularly with moonlight, smoke, or a soft cloth to keep the energy clear. (Check out our blog on how to cleanse your crystals for more tips.)
Final Thoughts
Crystal scrying is a beautiful way to combine meditation with intuition. While the crystal ball has a long tradition in history and folklore, you don’t need to be a fortune teller to enjoy this practice.
Think of scrying as a quiet conversation between you, your crystal, and your intuition. With patience and an open mind, you may discover insights, guidance, or simply a deeper sense of peace.
At Blissful Things NZ, we respect crystals as more than just beautiful treasures for some—they’re tools for connection and discovery. Whether you’re drawn to a clear quartz sphere, a deep obsidian ball, a gentle amethyst, or (like me) a palm stone, crystal scrying is an invitation to slow down, gaze within, and let the magic unfold.
