Satin Spar Selenite

Selenite Satin Spar – A Stone of Light, Clarity, and Cleansing

Selenite Satin Spar is one of those crystals that instantly creates a feeling of peace. With its soft, pearly glow and silky fibres, it has become one of the most popular crystals for meditation, energy cleansing and home décor.

If you've explored the crystal world, you've probably heard the name "Selenite." However, the white fibrous material commonly sold as Selenite in crystal shops—including here in New Zealand—is actually Satin Spar Gypsum. True Selenite is a transparent variety of the same mineral, gypsum. While the names are often used interchangeably, understanding the difference helps us appreciate this beautiful mineral even more.

🌍 Scientific Information

Selenite Satin Spar is a fibrous variety of gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulfate mineral with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O.

It forms when mineral-rich saline water slowly evaporates, leaving behind layers of gypsum that gradually develop into different crystal forms. The silky appearance of Satin Spar comes from thousands of fine, parallel fibres that reflect light, creating its distinctive glow.

Quick Facts

  • Mineral: Gypsum

  • Variety: Satin Spar

  • Mohs Hardness: 2

  • Crystal System: Monoclinic

  • Lustre: Silky to pearly

Large deposits are found in Morocco, Mexico, the United States, Spain and Australia, with much of the Satin Spar sold in New Zealand coming from Morocco.

✨ Metaphysical Properties

Please note: The following reflects traditional crystal beliefs and spiritual practices. These beliefs are not supported by scientific evidence and should not replace professional medical advice.

Within crystal traditions, Selenite Satin Spar is believed to:

  • Cleanse and recharge other crystals.

  • Clear stagnant or unwanted energy.

  • Encourage peace, balance and mental clarity.

  • Support meditation and spiritual growth.

  • Enhance intuition and connection with the Crown Chakra.

Many people place Selenite Satin Spar in their homes, meditation spaces or beside their bed to create a calm and uplifting atmosphere.

🕊️ History and Symbolism

The name Selenite comes from Selene, the ancient Greek goddess of the Moon. Its gentle glow reminded early observers of moonlight, leading to its beautiful name.

Today, Selenite Satin Spar remains one of the most recognised and widely used crystals in modern crystal practice.

🌿 Care and Handling

Selenite Satin Spar is a beautiful but delicate mineral.

  • Mohs hardness: 2

  • Scratches easily.

  • Can chip or splinter if dropped.

  • Avoid prolonged contact with water, as gypsum can slowly deteriorate.

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth and store away from harder minerals.

With a little care, Selenite Satin Spar will remain a beautiful addition to your collection for years to come.

Whether you're fascinated by its geology, appreciate its natural beauty, or enjoy the traditional beliefs surrounding its calming energy, Selenite Satin Spar is a timeless crystal that continues to be loved by collectors and crystal enthusiasts around the world.
