Can You Swallow Crystals?

Can You Swallow Crystals? (A Question Worth Asking)

I’ve always been brought up to believe that no question is a dumb question.

So whenever someone asks me something a little “left field,” I do my best to answer as truthfully and directly as possible, with a little love sprinkled in. Because let’s be honest, if you love crystals, that kind of comes with the territory.

Every so often, I get asked: “Can you swallow crystals?”

As in the Crystals, Minerals and Rocks we sell.

To some people, this might sound a bit unusual. But I always come back to that belief, there are no silly questions, especially if you’re new to a subject. And after more than 40 years of loving and working with crystals, I might know a tiny bit (though I certainly don’t claim to know everything).

As my dad wisely used to say, “The more you know, the more you realise how much you don’t know.” And when it comes to crystals, that couldn’t be more true.

So, back to the question…

Can you swallow or ingest crystals?

The short answer, said with complete honesty, care, and compassion—is:

No. Absolutely not.

(And if I’m being completely honest, in my head I’m also thinking: please don’t, please don’t, please don’t!)

Why not?

There are a few really important reasons:

1. Many crystals contain harmful elements
Crystals and minerals are made up of natural elements, some of which can be toxic to the human body. For example, cinnabar contains mercury, and other stones may include substances that are not safe to ingest.

2. Your body isn’t designed to process them
Our bodies are built to break down food, not minerals and rocks. Introducing crystals into your digestive system can lead to harmful chemical reactions or irritation.

3. Risk of internal injury
Crystals, whether raw or tumbled, can be sharp or uneven. Swallowing them could cause damage to your throat, stomach, or digestive tract.

4. Choking and blockages
There’s also a very real risk of choking or creating a blockage in your airway or digestive system—even with smaller stones.

5. Crushing them doesn’t make them safe
Even if crystals are ground down, they are still not safe to ingest and can still cause harm.

A gentle note from me to you

If anyone ever suggests swallowing crystals, I would strongly encourage you to question that advice.

There are many beautiful and safe ways to work with crystals, holding them, meditating with them, placing them in your space but ingesting them is not one of them.

If you’re interested in alternative remedies that involve ingesting something, it’s always best to speak with a qualified health professional or visit a trusted health store.

At the end of the day, I’ll always stand by this:

Ask the question. Be curious. Learn all you can.

But most importantly, stay safe.

With love,
Kristy
