Trigonotreta (brachiopod) Fossil Lot
From Great Western Tiers, Tasmania, Australia.
Age about Permian.
Trigonotreta is an extinct genus of brachiopod, a type of marine invertebrate with hard shells on the upper and lower surfaces. Belonging to the order Spiriferida, Trigonotreta lived during the late Paleozoic era, especially common in the Carboniferous and Permian periods. Its distinctive features include strongly ribbed shells and a wide hinge line, often with wing-like extensions. These ancient filter feeders lived on the sea floor, anchored by a stalk called a pedicle. Trigonotreta fossils are popular with collectors for their detailed preservation and provide valuable insight into marine life before the age of dinosaurs.
