Campo del Cielo Meteorite (Argentina)

The Campo del Cielo refers to a group of iron meteorites found in an area of the same name about 1,000 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina, between the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero. The impact field spans roughly 3 km by 20 km and contains at least 26 craters, the largest measuring 115 m by 91 m. These craters are believed to be around 4,000–5,000 years old. Although first officially reported in 1576, they were long known to the region’s Indigenous peoples. To date, more than 100 tonnes of iron meteorite fragments have been recovered from the site.
