Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a variety of cryptocrystalline quartz—specifically a form of chalcedony—that is typically dark green with distinctive red or brownish-red speckles caused by iron oxide inclusions, such as hematite. Scientifically, it is composed of silicon dioxide and forms through the deposition of silica from groundwater in cavities or cracks, often in volcanic rocks. The red spots, which resemble drops of blood, inspired the stone’s historical and mystical name. Metaphysically, Bloodstone is known as a stone of courage, vitality, and protection. It is associated with the root and heart chakras, believed to strengthen physical endurance, purify the blood, and promote resilience during times of challenge. Traditionally used by warriors and healers, it is said to enhance decision-making, clear confusion, and ground spiritual energies into the body, offering both strength and stability.
