Tangiwai, also known as Bowenite, is a beautiful New Zealand stone valued both scientifically and spiritually. Scientifically, Tangiwai is a variety of the mineral Bowenite, which belongs to the Serpentine Group of minerals. It is typically found in rich green shades ranging from pale apple green to deep olive and is prized for its smooth, tough structure that allows it to be polished to a glossy finish. In New Zealand, Tangiwai is historically associated with Māori culture and is sometimes described as a form of Pounamu, though it is technically a serpentine rather than nephrite jade. Metaphysically, Tangiwai is often connected with emotional healing and the flow of the heart. Its name translates roughly to “tears” in Māori, and many believe it helps release old emotional pain, bringing calm, compassion, and gentle renewal. This soothing green stone is thought to encourage balance, support the heart chakra, and help restore inner peace while strengthening a person’s connection to the natural energies of Aotearoa.
