Whangārei Glass (from an old collection)
Measurements are approximate
6cm x 3cm x 4cm and 100grams
This material comes from the old glass factory in Whangārei, New Zealand. When the glassworks closed many years ago, it is said that members of the local gem and mineral club were able to obtain some of the leftover glass slag.
Some people shaped the material into sculptures, but many rock hounds used it as decorative pieces in their gardens, often surrounded by other New Zealand treasures such as petrified wood, obsidian, and jasper. Even though it is technically glass, it was welcomed with open arms by the lapidary community as a colorful, beautiful display piece. It also carries a sense of nostalgia for what was once a thriving Northland industry.
Over the years, this material has become harder to find and has slowly become a collectable piece for New Zealand rock and mineral enthusiasts.
